Train to Stressy Town
Yesterday a long time massage client of mine asked me how, with all that is going on these days, do massage therapists manage to not get stressed? As I attempted to answer him I realized that I don't see "stress" as a fixed destination that you fall victim to or get stuck in, but our culture sure does. Maybe my 20+ years of putting my hands around "stress" for a living has a lot to do with it! I know it is my job to reach his muscles but I realized after his question that my bigger task is to help everyone I touch shift perspective. This is what I like to call a "drip, drip, drip" approach and I like to visualize water slowly splashing down on a rock. The softer, seemingly gentle water will dissolve the stone, eventually. And in essence that is what massage is.
I know kinesthetic people manage stress differently than their visual and auditory counterparts. I've been to enough massage schools and seminars and seen the pop up stretching sessions and impromptu yoga classes to know. Our kinesthetic nature is always up front and center. This doesn't insulate us from stress. Every MT I know tells a story of how a particular client literally "zapped" them energetically, transferring stress on a cellular level. To the world we look like we manage to not get stressed - the trick now is to teach 'em how we make it look so easy! Drip, drip, drip!
