Simplifying the simple
I overheard something last night that was a reminder, again. We are human beings, not human doings.

Bone Deep Truths
A neighbor of mine has been recovering from surgery for ovarian cancer. She has good days and bad days. I saw her husband walking the road this weekend and invited him for a massage he so desperately needs. And of course I offered one for her as well. She called that evening so looking forward to the bodywork. In the face of this heavy weight she's facing I felt incredibly grateful to have something true, something tangible to give.

Deflective Culture
In our culture, many people work at tasks they are given. A small percentage of people work at creating solutions. As healers we know we must always be creative to address our clients holistically. The client comes in directing us to task - we must re-direct ourselves to solutions.

freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose
Many people like free things. I guess I'm picky because I only like free stuff that actually WORKS. Here's a cool thing I discovered keeping myself awake listening to talk radio on my recent road trip. Google is trying to usurp the phone company. Good? Bad? Who knows. But if you dial 1-800-GOOG-411 you can utilize directory assistance free of charge versus paying Verizon up to $2 for the privilege. Who knew talk radio could be so worthwhile.

AMTA National 2009
Recently I was speaking with a competitor. This is what I do quite a bit of at tradeshows. I've always tried to be friendly to every other product company. I firmly believe the universe is a big place and I want to make the best stuff I can but I don't want to be alone in the process.
This competitor told me they were looking at a drayage bill of over $7,000 for bringing in a large amount of product to the AMTA National Conference that just took place last week. Drayage is when you pay for the hotel staff to bring your products and display booth into the exhibit hotel. In union run hotels this is required. I'm not anti-union but these prices make it impossible for small companies to attend because they charge you by the pound! And our stuff is mighty heavy. The hotel rooms at this conference center were also about $200 a night. The competitor was big and obviously decided to pay the charges over and above the booth rent which brought the total spent to exhibit to over $15,000. That's a whole lotta massage oil!
But my question for you is - why does the AMTA continue to pick venues that are this expensive? I've been involved with the AMTA for 20 years and I'm done shouting. I think the conferences are an integral part of our professional bodyworker culture. But we have to get real. Real venues for people on a budget in the real world - including the companies who support the events through their exhibit fees. If you're involved in an AMTA conference on either the local or national level - please think about this!
